Our first twilight lecture for the year was held on Wednesday 21st March where a good attendance of members and non members gathered to socialize and enjoy drinks and canapes prior to being ushered into the Stillwel room to listen to our guest speaker, Prof Gary Egan who spoke on the fantastic topic of Visualize the brain.
Prof Egan explained to his audience his involvement with research of the human brain over the last 15-20 years. He covered interesting facts on how medical research has developed over the last 100 years and the projected developments that will advance over the next 5-10 years.
His discussion covered how modern scanners can image our thoughts up to 8 seconds before we can even have the thought, how motor actions are seen in various parts of the brain. Professor Egan showed pictures of the brain at cellular level and the complexities of this, how they connect and signal with each other and how truly amazing and complex our brains are. Brain research has been taken from a somewhat cottage industry to mainstream activity with industrialized approaches. It is a very competitive and large industry now.
